We sure needed to be patient… Like a lot of people in this wine business, making wine was a long time dream. Without being experts by any means, we have been passionate about wine, just like our other passion around food in general. Obviously, these two passions are intimately bound together and dependant upon each other.
When finally, we had the long sought after opportunity to move from the east coast to San Francisco in 2007, starting an urban winery was on the short list of “urgent things to do”, right after letting go of the less glamorous, back breaking, boring (to us anyway), time wasting tasks of our suburburban life such as mowing, weeding, shoveling, snow blowing, raking, and a whole bunch of other thing we just couldn’t wait to escape from.
The neighborhood we moved to in San Francisco was picked for three main reasons: access to city center, proximity to the train station, but perhaps more importantly, close neighbor to Crushpad. Needless to say, the concept of Crushpad was essential to the realization of our urban winery. www.crushpadwine.com
In 2008, we moved to the historical Dog Patch area of San Francisco , about 2 blocks from the winery. We bought a property in the very building that housed one of the first urban wineries of San Francisco called Shilling Wine Cellars, established at the very beginning of last century. The winery building was eventually sold to the Esprit Clothing company in the mid 70’s, before being converted to condos in 2008. In some ways, our winery’s business address being located in the same building that housed the Shilling winery, probably closes some kind of historical loop…
